Our Belts & Explanations

In Taekwondo, the colour of the belt shows the level of development of a Taekwondo student. Upon completion of a stated training period, students take a “Grading Exam” accordingly and belts are subsequently awarded to those who have shown adequate growth to merit the rank tested for.

There are 10 Geup (coloured belt) levels and 9 Dan (Black Belt) levels.

White Belt (10th & 9th Geup)

The white belt, which signifies purity, indicates that a person is a beginner or novice in Taekwondo. The white belt is the first belt obtained in Taekwondo after enrolling in a Taekwondo school.

Yellow Belt (8th & 7th Geup)

Likened to the sun, rising in the morning, the yellow belt indicates that the person is growing in the art and is beginning to understand the basic concepts of Taekwondo techniques.

Blue Belt (6th & 5th Geup)

For those with knowledge, the sky is the limit. The blue belt shows that, like the clear blue sky, the student has a clear understanding of Taekwondo techniques and is reaching higher, like a plant growing towards the sky.

Brown Belt (4th & 3rd Geup)

The brown belt indicates that a student has developed a solid foundation in Taekwondo and can nurture the growth of younger students. The colour of the belt is compared to that of the earth on which all things are supported and from where living things get nourishment to grow.

Red Belt (2nd & 1st Geup)

The colour red indicates danger or caution. The student is now technically sound and must now learn control and restraint, and most importantly, develop and show maturity in the art of Taekwondo.

Poom

Younger students under the age of 16 who have completed all requirements to be a Black Belt are given a belt called Poom. The Poom is half black and half red, longitudinally. The student may continue to train and advance in rank as poom until the age of 16 when the poom is replaced with an equivalent Black Belt.

Black Belt (Dan)

The much coveted Black Belt shows that the student has shown a high level of maturity and technical proficiency in the art of Taekwondo, in other words, mastery. There are nine Dan levels in Taekwondo which means nine levels of mastery.
